Military Coups and Their Effect on Sports: The Case of Turkey

Abstract: Although military coups, memorandums and coup attempts do not occupy an important place in every society, they have an impact that changes the course of life in Turkey as in many other countries of the world. Sports emerge as an area that can be affected by coups, coup attempts and memorandums that have important economic, political and social effects for a society. The aim of the study was to examine sports in the context of the budget allocated to sports and sporting success in the period when coup attempts and memorandums were experienced, in particular military coups. As a conclusion present paper showed that sporting success increased after military coups and decreased after memorandums.
