Abstract: Based on the first generalized and analyzed material from the monthly journal Universitetskie Izvestiya (University Proceedings) for 1875–1915, the place of Bulgarian studies in the teaching plans of St. Vladimir University in the last quarter of the 19th – early 20th centuries is studied. Archival materials from the Institute of Manuscripts of the V.I. Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine (from the personal archives of Kyiv University teachers who taught subjects in the field of Bulgarian studies or those covering this area) are also used. The comparative analysis utilizes materials from the Zapiski (Notes) of the universities of Kharkiv and Odessa for this period. It establishes the dependence of Bulgarian studies (as well as Slavic studies in general) on the political course of the Russian Empire in the universities’ teaching plans.
